I did my level 1 in BSL at my local community centre where deaf classes were held and have continued learning signs from online resources.
Jade - Is sign language easy to learn?
Sign language like any language is quite difficult to learn, however there are fun ways to learn and remember the signs for example signing to music helps you to remember them.
We were told he would never be able to communicate but I just couldn’t give up, so I taught him sign and after a year and a half of practicing he signed back.
His communication skills have improved so much and he can now use so many signs. I originally set up Sign Along With Us
on social media. I did this so I could show my friends and family how to sign so they could communicate with Christian.
I didn’t want him to be isolated because he could only talk to the people in his house. Once I set it up I started getting some really nice messages from people saying how much our page has helped them and I very quickly became aware of how much signing could help people who have communication difficulties.
I then started running sessions in the local community centre for free where people could come and learn to do Sign Supported English, to music the way that myself
and Christian
do.
I then saw the amazing group of people who came and knew they were so special and wanted to show more and more people how important it is to learn sign and how much fun it can be so we entered BGT
and our journey keeps growing from there.
Jade - What do you want to do in life?
My dream has always been from being a little girl to be an actress, I love acting and performing.
I have also always wanted to be a primary school teacher, since Christian
came into my life that changed into wanting to be a teacher in a special educational needs primary school.
In my dream world I would be an actress and volunteer in my spare time at SEN schools.
Jade - What do you want to achieve teaching sign?
I want to inspire people to start learning some sign and show them that anyone can do it and it can be really fun at the same time.
I would love to make the world a more inclusive place for Christian
and other people like him.
Jade - What do you enjoy away from signing?
Away from signing I really enjoy acting, dancing, football (and practically all sports), being a brownie leader, spending time with my family, watching tv and eating food.
